I love having things to stretch my brain around; things I might not have thought to ponder on my own. Here is one such thing:
"By perseverance the snail reached the ark."
~Charles Spurgeon~
Snails are slow. Dreadfully slow. Their evil counterparts -- slugs -- eat my hostas and sometimes munch on my lamb's ear, and they are just plain gross. But I digress. The point is, snails are S-L-O-W. This makes me wonder, how did the snail made it to the ark in time? If all the animals got "the call" at the same time, if the lions and horses and monkeys and dogs and birds all got started at the same time as the lowly snail, then HOW did he get there in time? I have a theory...
The snail was slow, so he lived a less hurried, less frantic life. This allowed him time to "be still" and know that God is God. The snail listened carefully to the still small voice of God, so he started his long, slow journey way before those faster four-legged and flying creatures. He knew God's plans for him because he took the time to listen.
Webster's American Family dictionary defines "perseverance" this way:
1) steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. 2) continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation.

The little snail continued despite the hardships and discouragements he faced. He persevered because he knew that God was with him. Even if he didn't know the hows and the whys, he knew that God was in control. He knew that his difficulties were only temporary and that his troubles would be over when he reached his destination: for him, that was the ark. For us, it's heaven: eternity with God.Revisit Webster's second definition for a minute. God's grace never ends. It is with us always, and because of that continuing state of grace, we will have eternal salvation. In Titus 3:7, Paul reminds us that "[God] generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life."
I never thought I'd say this about a mollusk, but I want to be like that little snail. A visit to Wikipedia revealed that snails are extraordinarily diverse in habit, and can be found in a wide range of different environments, including deserts and even "the abyssal depths of the sea". That means we can all be like the snail: we can persevere no matter who we are, no matter where we live, no matter what the circumstances-- even if we are in the figurative desert of our lives or when we feel that we are in the abyssal depths of the sea.
"Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:12

Jamie,
This was really great. I loved the scripture you used to conclude with!
Blessings to you♥
Jamie,
AMAZING! That was the first word that came to mind as I read this. You are TRULY inspirational. I enjoyed this so much and felt so touched by it that I'm forwarding it to my homeschool moms group. Thanks for such powerful words - on what I USE to think was such a simple animal. Although after reading this devotion -I could learn A LOT from a snail - slowing down and 'smelling the flowers' :)
And THANKS on the Japanese beetle- that little 'bug' drove me nuts :). Blessings to you and your family!!!
This was an awesome post!
Blessings to you.
I just found your blog and i enjoyed it :)
Ive always been fascinated with homeschool even though I -myself - hated it when i had it for 9th grade :)
Awesome post! Power packed with inspiration and encouragement. I learned a lot, too. God bless you for sharing your heart with us.
Beautiful post Jamie, very wise insights! I just love how God's creation continually teaches to those who will listen. I can certainly tell you are listening.
I'm tossing around a new blog theme in my head lately. One called "Go to the Ant", where everyone can share with others lessons they have learned just like this from God's creation.
Blessings,
Melissa

Jamie, Great Post! That was a great analogy with the snail. We all need to remember to persevere. Thanks for the reminder.
Wow, I had never really thought of it in snail terms before! What wonderful ingsight.
And it also made me think, perhaps the little snails hitched a ride on the back of some other faster moving creature for a while too. Oh, how we need each other to make it sometimes!
Great point, Nancy!!!
Such an awesome post.
Thanks for visiting my blog! I enjoyed visiting yours. Good to know there are so many other homeschoolers in the world!
Love your post! I just posted today about perseverance and it's so encouraging to read your blog! I never had those thoughts about a snail either. :) Thanks for the encouragement!

I feel like my life is like the little snail right now. We just have to be still and know that He is God as we are patient with our adoption process.
He is in control and we will trust His timing. :)
What a great post. I really love your perspective!
Have you ever shared the Noah's Ark poem and picture book by Peter Spier with Kathryn? It's a great one.
I wish I could slow down like a snail sometimes. I seem to gao all the time. By coincidence, I homeschool also. I thought the summer would be a time of rest, but I was wrong again. One thing I can say is that your blog is very calming.BTW,I found you through "Hey look, a Chicken.
I'll be back for more!

Oh no. I don't want to be a snail! Maybe something like a jackrabbit, for obvious reasons...like my wretched impatience to get to where God wants to take me in life, yes? Oh well. As long as I can manage to have a good attitude, I SUPPOSE I'll survive. Great post!
That's cool. It's the little things that make you stop and realize that God really does have everything in control...even the snails.
Hi Jamie!
I finally got your pictures up on my "other" blog! Check them out!
Kathy
This is exactly why I'm always running to catch up! I'm the last one to listen!!!
Great post, Jamie. Thank you!
Great post, Jamie! I love the verse you choice. Very encouraging.
I realize this is an old post but If you do read it, I just want to tell you how much I enjoyed it. To be like a snail in this case, is a good thing, as Martha would say. : )
