A Blueberry Flavored Day

Mmm, mmm, mmm!handful of blueberries
There's not much better on a hot summer day than a handful of tasty blueberries from my very own garden!

Last spring we planted two blueberry bushes, but we only got a few little blueberries last summer. This year, we have one bush that's making quite a few berries and they are SO yummy! The other bush didn't make one single berry, but I really shouldn't expect any berries at all for at least the first two years, so I'm not worried about my berry-barren bush. I'm just delighted that we do have some blueberries this year and I am looking forward to more next summer!

When I came in from a trip to the mailbox with a handful of blueberries, Kathryn was eager to go pick some herself.

Today, as she was picking the berries, she told me she really felt like a farmer. {grin}

Last weekend, as we were driving around and passed some pretty victorian style old homes, Kathryn started talking about our "dream home." For her, this home would be in the middle of a few acres of land so we could have goats and chickens and a cow. It wouldn't be very big--just about the size we have now, she said--but it would have a "run-around" porch. I've always called it a wrap-around porch, but run-around does sound more fun! We'd have a big garden and grow lots of veggies, too. And we'd have neighbors and a grocery store not too far away.

That sounds like just the right kind of dream home to me, too. {smile} Oh, and how do you like her adorable little garden hat? Only $2 at JoAnn Fabric store! (I love a good deal!)Later in the day, Walker (one our homeschool cousin-friends) came over to play for a couple of hours. Kathryn was eager to share the bounty of her little harvest with Walker, and she saved some for Ken to surprise him when he got home from work. Since we won't be getting a whole lot more this year, we may go with our cousins to a pick-your-own berry farm one day next week so we can have enough to freeze. Then we'll be able to have more blueberry-flavored days ...

I just planted 6 Blueberry bushes this spring. I had read in several places on the internet that you should pick off any blossoms that grow on your bushes the first year. So that is what I did. Now some of my bushes didn't blossom at all, so I'm not sure about them.:)
I can hardly wait till next summer! I am hoping for lots of fresh blueberries to eat!

Hi Jamie -

I love fresh blueberries. We don't have them in our yard but we have raspberries that are just coming on. What a treat! I love that darling hat. Such fun.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for leaving your sweet comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the photos of God's handiwork in my part of the world. I, too, wish you could have been here to see it yourself. If you ever come this way please let me know and I will plan to take you to the lake and to my favorite mountain. And there is so much more to see on the way!

The blueberries look delicious! Thank you for stopping by my blog and I look forward to reading yours! I'm also interested in all of your homeschooling insight as we will need to make a decision for our boys in the future. I think that in this world we are living in, God is making the right decision clearer to me everyday!

What a sweet blog you have. Great, fresh pictures. I feel like I've just taken a walk through your garden, which is nice for me, since I just killed my porch aloe vera plant. Guess it needed more water! I'll be visiting again. :)

I love your daughters hat and her cute little necklace! Perfect for berry pickin'!

I remember a couple years back picking blueberries with my niece and making a yummy pie! What fun memories! Nothin tastes quite the same as fresh home grown anything!!!

I love Kathryn's hat too. So cute. What a darling farmer she makes.
I wish we had blue berries. We enjoyed our wild black berry vines but they are all gone now. The berry vines we planted last year all died. Save me some of yours. They look delicious

I'm moving in with Kathryn! She described my dream house to a tee, except maybe the farm animals. I'm just really not into chickens. A goat is okay. Our neighbors here used to have those. I definitely want a run around porch!

Your blueberries look luscious. I think I may have to schedule a picking day soon too.

Yummy! Fresh blueberries are one of our favorite things in our house. My kids and husband especially love it when I use them to make blueberry muffins with strudel on top!

Your photos are beautiful btw!

Blessings,
